Although it is a unique and unforgettable experience, it is essential to follow a series of precautions to bathe in the Dead Sea, otherwise it can become an uncomfortable or even unpleasant moment. The
#1. Wear sandals or water shoes
The first of the precautions for bathing in the Dead Sea is to protect the soles of your feet, which is the first part of your body that will come into contact with this special place. The reason for protecting them is to avoid cuts, as the bottom of this ‘sea’ is not smooth, but irregular and sharp in many places, as it can be full of salt crystals, both on the bottom and on the shore.
#2. Do not submerge your head
Once inside, do not submerge your head for anything in the world: if you do, your eyes will suffer, even if you close them. The reason is that the salt water would remain on your eyelashes and, when you open your eyelids, the salt would reach your eyes, causing a very unpleasant stinging sensation, difficult to calm, as your hands and the rest of your body will be full of salt at that moment.
#3. Do not splash
For the same reason as the previous point, you have to avoid splashes so that no rebellious drop can end up in your eyes. Therefore, the Dead Sea is not exactly a place to play or joke around, so your movements should be calm and slow at all times.
#4. Stay out if you have any wounds
Another precaution is to avoid contact of the water with any wound on your skin, no matter how small. If that wound is in the upper part of your body, then you can only get wet from the waist down, remaining standing at all times.
#5. Do not shave the day before
The salt of the Dead Sea can have positive and antiseptic effects on the skin, but if it is especially sensitive, the stinging sensation will be worse than any other associated benefit. In this way, avoid shaving your legs and the rest of your body in the hours before bathing, with 24 hours being a good precaution.
#6. Do not stay in the water for more than 15 minutes
The proportion of salt in the water is so high that it can be too strong a shock for your skin. Therefore, the time you can stay in the water cannot be very long: at most, 15 minutes. And if you notice that your skin is already showing symptoms of stinging or discomfort, that will be the time to leave, even if those 15 minutes have not elapsed.
#7. Rinse off as soon as possible
As soon as you leave, the first thing you should do is rinse your skin with water from the showers, not salt water. You should do it thoroughly, to remove all the salt deposited on it. And after this procedure, you can spread your skin with the famous black mud that is usually available to bathers on the shore.
#8. Do not submerge your camera, mobile phone or jewelry
The last of these precautions for bathing in the Dead Sea is not exactly a health tip, but it is equally important: do not submerge your mobile phone, camera, watch or jewelry, as they may suffer the corrosive effect of the extreme salinity of the water.
