The Best of Jordan

7 days: Tour with the best of Jordan

It’s hard to concentrate the best of Jordan in just 7 days. But this circuit achieves it thanks to a travel program that leaves nothing to chance. The roadmap includes, of course, Petra, but also other famous destinations such as Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. In addition, he does not forget the north of the country (Jerash, Ajloun) or the main religious destinations of the center (Madaba, Mount Nebo). And as a differentiating element with respect to other circuits, this package also includes Aqaba, on the Red Sea, the only Jordanian city with a beach on the open sea and, therefore, a destination that could not be missing from this list with the best of Jordan. If you only have one week at your disposal and want to visit the highlights of the country, this is your circuit.

History and monuments on a route full of culture

Each trip is a first-person history and culture lesson. And this circuit with the best of Jordan It proves it. The program includes guided tours of the most outstanding monuments and archaeological sites in the country, which will take us to very varied eras of the Jordanian past.

There is no doubt that, for many, the best of Jordan is in Petra: this city carved in the rock shows the tourist elegant monuments, in an immersive visit through the Nabataean and Roman times of this destination. But for immersion in Roman civilization, nothing better than the archaeological and monumental site of Jerash, the ‘Pompeii of Jordan’.

The medieval castles (Ajloun, Karak) are also architectural monuments that symbolize a very peculiar era: the Christian Crusades to conquer Jerusalem, which also reached Jordanian territory. And in places like Madaba and Mount Nebo we will see how history and religion intermingle, fortunately for travelers more interested in culture.

Sea and land landscapes among the best of Jordan

On a list with the best of Jordan Not only must man-made monuments be included, but also natural monuments created by nature over millions of years. One of the best examples is Wadi Rum, a lunar landscape desert where mountains, rocks and canyons take the form of bridges, arches and other whims.

The Dead Sea is, in itself, a whim of the Earth, which the current traveler is lucky enough to know: this lake of tectonic origin is the lowest point on the planet (-400 meters above sea level, approximately) and its waters have a salinity level so high that it allows the bather to float effortlessly. This saline composition also prevents the existence of marine life, hence its name.

Quite the opposite of another landscape that also deserves to be among the best of Jordan: the Red Sea. Here, under its waters, an explosion of life and color emerges that will fascinate all those who dare to dive or contemplate the seabed. Fish, coral reefs, turtles and much more on a crystalline coastline where you can do many other activities.

Itinerary of this circuit through the best of Jordan

Day 2: Amman - Ajloun - Jerash - Amman

On this second day we will begin to discover the best of Jordan. Specifically, the best of northern Jordan, since the program of the day will take us to this region near the capital.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will travel by road to Ajloun, where there is a castle erected in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, on previous Byzantine buildings. Its architects were the Ayyubids of Saladin and the Mamluks, as a defense against the Christian crusaders and the Mongols. This complex attracts attention for its military architecture, but also for the panoramic view it offers of the landscape: a succession of green hills that are lost in the horizon, this being one of the highest (1,250 meters above sea level).

Not far from Ajloun is the second stop of this day: Jerash, which certainly deserves to be among the best in Jordan. The ancient city of Gerasa, which was one of the most important in the eastern part of the Roman Empire, is preserved in magnificent condition. We will walk among the columns of the forum (Oval Square), triumphal arches (Arch of Hadrian), pagan temples (Zeus, Aphrodite) and chrysitans (Byzantine churches), theaters of excellent acoustics … and many other monuments that, fortunately for the traveler, remain standing.

At the conclusion of this second excursion, we will return to Amman and, depending on the time of arrival and dinner at the hotel, there may be some free time in the capital.

  • Breakfast at hotel in Amman
  • Road trips to:
    • Ajloun: visit of the castle
    • Jerash: visit of the Roman city
  • Return to Amman and free time
  • Dinner and overnight at hotel in Amman

Day 3: Amman - Madaba - Mount Nebo - Karak - Petra

On the third day, we left Amman not to return again on this circuit. In return, we will make a route through the center and south of the country, but not before having breakfast at the hotel and making a brief panoramic tour of the capital. It is worth it because some of its monuments are also among the best in Jordan, such as the Roman Theatre.

The first city we will visit near Amman will be Madaba. Specifically, the church of San Jorge, because inside is the map-mosaic of the Holy Land. Its great value lies not only in its date of creation (sixth century, in Byzantine times) or in its detail, but also in the fact that it is considered one of the oldest representations of this sacred territory for Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Next, we will head to Mount Nebo, from where Moses overlooked the Promised Land. Travelers more interested in religion will consider this precinct to be between the best of Jordan, not only for its church and its memorials, but also for the viewpoint that allows the visitor to contemplate what the prophet saw with his eyes: the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley, Jericho, Jerusalem …

Then we will take the King’s Road or the Dead Sea Road heading south, to stop later in Karak. This city, collected by the way in the mosaic map of Madaba, has a large castle full of history: built by the Christian crusaders in the twelfth century and taken by the army of Saladin shortly after, it surprises with its strong military architecture. Therefore, it is between the best of Jordan to understand what happened in that era of conquests and reconquests, of advances and setbacks with an eye on the kingdom of Jerusalem.

We, on the other hand, will advance, without retreating, towards Petra. But we will leave the visit for the next day, so we will have dinner and spend the night in a hotel located just opposite, in the town of Wadi Musa.

  • Breakfast at hotel in Amman
  • Road trip by:
    • Madaba: visit of the church of San Jorge and its mosaic map
    • Mount Nebo: visit of the mountain enclosure
    • Karak: visit of the Crusader castle and Ayyubid
  • Arrival in Wadi Musa (Petra)
  • Dinner and overnight at hotel in Wadi Musa (Petra)

Day 4: Little Petra - Aqaba

Petra is the most famous destination internationally, so it occupies an essential place in this circuit for the best of Jordan. Specifically, the morning of this fourth day, which will begin with the corresponding breakfast at the hotel in Wadi Musa.

We will start the visit soon and speed up the displacements around the enclosure thanks to the horse service that we have reserved. They will take us from the Tomb of the Obelisks to the Treasury, passing through the Siq or rocky canyon that vertebrates the first section of this city excavated in the rock. Petra is declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and was voted one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, so it has many other interesting places to visit: the Street of the Façades, the theater, the royal tombs, the Colonnaded Street …

After discovering all these places, we will move to the nearby Al Beida where Petra’s ‘younger sister’ is located, and therefore, less known: Little Petra. But it also deserves to be part of this circuit for the best of Jordan because it responds to the same concept as Petra: settled on the rock, it has picturesque spaces carved into view. In its origins, it was probably a population that served Petra, when it was the main Nabataean city in the area.

After knowing this amazing place, we will get on board our vehicle to travel to the southern tip of the country, where the city of Aqaba is. We will arrive in time for dinner and to rest at the hotel.

  • Breakfast of hotel in Wadi Musa
  • Morning visit of Petra
  • Visit of Little Petra in the afternoon
  • Road trip to Aqaba
  • Dinner and Hotel in Aqaba

Day 5: Aqaba - Wadi Rum

The fifth day is another of the highlights of this circuit for the best of Jordan, because we use it to know two places that well deserve that consideration: Aqaba and Wadi Rum.

After breakfast at the hotel, you will spend the morning getting to know this port city, the only one bathed by an open sea in Jordan, the Red Sea. It is the ideal time to take a quiet walk through the center, to do some activity or to take a bath in the crystal clear waters of its beaches. You will do it freely and, at the agreed time, we will meet again to travel to the desert of Wadi Rum.

This desert is a nature reserve declared World Heritage by Unesco, and is considered the best of Jordan for adventure activities in 4×4. That will be what we do in the afternoon: a two-hour route through tracks and dunes, between mountains of impossible shapes and canyons that hide millenary petroglyphs. It is no coincidence that Wadi Rum fascinated T.E. Lawrence, the British soldier and writer popularized in the film
Lawrence of Arabia
.

After the route, we will pick ourselves up in the Bedouin tents of the camp where we will have dinner and sleep tonight. But until then, it is recommended to open your eyes wide: both the sunset and the starry night are a spectacle that can be appreciated just by looking around.

  • Breakfast at hotel in Aqaba
  • Free morning in Aqaba
  • Road trip to Wadi Rum:
    • Two-hour 4×4 route in the desert
  • Dinner and overnight at Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum

Day 6: Wadi Rum - Dead Sea

Waking up can be a mere procedure in any of the other six days of this circuit. But on this sixth day, the experience can be between the best of your trip to Jordan: leaving the store and seeing how the first lights of day are staining the desert environment is a simply magical experience. Therefore, breakfast at the camp will also have a special character, compared to the others.

After that, we will return to the road to go to another natural space that is also unique in the world: the Dead Sea. And to enjoy it to your liking, you will have the rest of the day off. That will allow you to take a bath in the salty waters of this lake named after the sea, thus discovering the nice feeling of floating effortlessly. You can also get in touch with the famous muds of this place, highly appreciated for their cosmetic properties. And, why not, you can also dedicate your time to get to know the environment, as there are museums (Dead Sea Museum) and sites (Lot’s Cave) that will be interesting for travelers with greater concerns.

Whatever the choice, this last dinner of the circuit is included in the hotel where you will also spend the night

  • Sunrise and breakfast at Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum
  • Road trip to the Dead Sea
  • Rest of the day at the Dead Sea
  • Dinner and overnight at hotel at the Dead Sea
