Safaris in Jordan: Are they possible? What kinds are there?

Perhaps you are wondering if there are safaris in Jordan and what they are: in this post we tell you about it. And we remind you that the agencies of the Mandala Tours group, to which Jordania Exclusiva belongs, are experts in safaris through natural reserves with wild fauna, so this country is not an exception in these experiences that we can provide tailored to each traveler.

Safaris in Jordan: in the Shaumari reserve

Indeed, you can go on safaris in Jordan to get up close to its native fauna. And the reference point for this is the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve, located several kilometers from the city of Azraq, to the east of the country (about 100 km from the capital, Amman).

The peculiarity of these safaris in Jordan is that the Shaumari Reserve was created expressly to accommodate the country’s native fauna, which is deeply threatened due to exacerbated hunting and the deterioration of its natural habitats due to the desertification of the region. For this reason, these habitats have been reconstructed here, combining pasture areas and seasonal flood wadis, along with the arid terrain typical of the desert.

The state institution in charge of creating and managing this reserve is the RSCN (The Royal Society For The Conservation of Nature), which promotes ecological tourism and has set up a large enclosed area here precisely for the protection and surveillance of its species. In any case, it is a huge area of 2,220 hectares, which can be traveled in a 4×4 as in a classic safari but also by bicycle and on foot, and has watchtowers. In addition, there are service areas for visitors, including playgrounds.

Animals to observe: oryx and donkey

Without a doubt, the great star in the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is the Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx), an elegant white antelope that became extinct in Jordan at the beginning of the 20th century but, thanks to this project, has been successfully reintroduced. In fact, it is considered one of the most iconic animals in the country, and it is no coincidence that the silhouette of the head of an oryx is recognized in the RSCN logo: its spectacular black horns, long and slender, make it unmistakable.

Another of the great protagonists of these safaris in Jordan is the onager (Equus hemionus onager), also called Persian wild donkey: a beautiful species characterized by its fawn coat, with short, dark manes. Gazelles, striped hyenas, jackals and foxes, among other wild animals, also live in this reserve.

How these safaris are carried out

These safaris in Jordan, as in other parts of the world, can be carried out in an all-terrain vehicle, with an open cabin and convertible roof to adapt it to the conditions of each moment, which facilitates 360º vision. In addition, these 4x4s have the necessary equipment for a comfortable experience for approximately one hour: water, binoculars and other extras.

The novelty of this Shaumari Wildlife Reserve is that, being a closed and well-sectorized area, it is also possible to carry out other types of explorations. For example, on foot, on routes of between 1 and 4 hours, depending on the capacity of each participant. Or by mountain bike, for approximately two hours. And in all cases, these explorations are carried out with a guide-monitor, who knows every corner of the reserve in depth and the most interesting details for visitors.

So if you like wildlife, these safaris in Jordan will be an interesting and different variant to what other countries in Africa and Asia have accustomed us to. If you do not want to miss the opportunity to experience it in first person, consult us to assess how to introduce one in your circuit through the country.
