Here is what you will find in them

Of course, not all coffee shops in Jordan are the same: they change depending on the audience they are aimed at as well as their location, whether in tourist areas, popular neighborhoods of large cities, or small towns. In this post, we aim to provide some insights into what you might encounter in them if you wish to stop for a drink and immerse yourself in their authentic atmospheres.

Modern or classic atmosphere?

A primary and generic distinction among coffee shops in Jordan is between those with a modern atmosphere and those with a classic air. By modern, we mean those focused on a young and young-adult audience, both women and men, with a more cosmopolitan setting, often featuring international touches on the menu. These are the ones you can find in places like the famous Rainbow Street and other central, busy areas of Amman.

In this group, we can also include chains, some of which are genuinely Jordanian, although their business concept differs little from those in Western countries. Those located near tourist monuments have a regular foreign clientele.

In contrast, coffee shops with a classic atmosphere are those we might call ‘traditional’, where almost all customers are Jordanians. And we emphasize the masculine aspect of the word Jordanians: the majority of those who frequent them are men or, at the very least, women accompanied by their husbands, although this fact is progressively changing. Due to their ‘typical’ character, we focus on them in this post.

What you can drink in Jordan’s coffee shops

Classic Jordanian coffee shops are usually places to enjoy a drink with local flavor. There are two main hot options. On one hand, tea (shai), with different versions of sweetness and flavor, including mint, as well as other specific types of infusions. On the other hand, coffee: while it does not have the ritualistic character associated with Bedouin communities, it has inherited from them a strong flavor with an abundance of grounds. As for cold drinks, soft drinks and fresh juices are very common choices among Jordanians. This is quite the opposite of alcohol, which is forbidden by Islam; only a certain level of tolerance is accepted for foreign customers or Jordanian Christians. For this very reason, it is not always easy to find establishments serving alcoholic beverages.

Regarding food, there is a great variety: many modern establishments using the name ‘café’ serve Jordanian sandwiches (arayes) and snacks, as well as local sweets and pastries. However, in the more classic coffee shops, there is usually no food menu, or at least not one extensive enough for lunch or dinner.

What you can do in coffee shops in Jordan

In addition to drinking and/or having a snack, Jordanian coffee shops, especially the classic ones, are meeting places for friends. While in modern ones it is common to see individuals alone using their mobile phones or laptops, in the more traditional ones it is easy to find small groups chatting over their drinks or even playing cards, dominoes, or backgammon.

Special mention should be made of narguilés or shishas (hookahs): many Jordanians still consider smoking these devices to be a social act. Although it was commonplace decades ago, anti-smoking laws have reduced their presence in establishments. While not prohibited as such, it is advisable to know in which places it is permitted and in which it is not.

In any case, every coffee shop in Jordan is different. Therefore, the assistance of our professionals will be very useful for you to understand which establishments are most suitable for you: whether a coffee shop with a modern atmosphere with city views and the possibility of eating something sweet or savory with your drink, or other more specific and not always easy-to-find places, such as those that serve alcohol or maintain a genuine classic atmosphere.

Of course, not all coffee shops in Jordan are the same: they change depending on the audience they are aimed at as well as their location, whether in tourist areas, popular neighborhoods of large cities, or small towns.
